There are over 62 million people in the United States who identify as Hispanic or Latino, making them the second largest racial or ethnic group. The terms Hispanic and Latino are broad and inclusive and can be used to describe anyone from a country in the Western Hemisphere with Spanish-speaking roots or who has family from a Central or South American country, including Mexico. As such, a single descriptor cannot capture the spirit and cultures of this diverse community. For that reason, many Hispanics use various self-designations that are inclusive of the full range of cultural backgrounds and identities. Some of these include Latina or Latino, Chicano, Boricua, Tejano, or even Afro-Latino (or Afro-Latinas).
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor and celebrate the rich traditions, vibrant celebrations, and deep sense of community that characterize these unique and cherished cultures. Two of the most important foundations of Latin and Hispanic culture are the family and food. These elements intertwine to form a way of life that is both deeply rooted and powerfully resilient.
NBCUniversal and Telemundo are shining a spotlight this Hispanic Heritage Month on engaging, authentic stories connecting with this vibrant community in an emotionally resonant way. From celebrating a quinceanera to examining the life and legacy of the iconic Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, these stories inspire, uplift and empower.
In an effort to highlight these stories, NBCUniversal and Telemundo have partnered with leading brands to shine a light on their Hispanic and Latina/e/o/x initiatives. This includes supporting Latina entrepreneurs and their efforts to create businesses that are impactful, meaningful and authentic. It also includes collaborating on programming that promotes the importance of preserving and promoting these distinct and dynamic cultures.
One such example is the story of former U.S Secretary of Education, Raul
Another example is the work being done by Liberty Mutual Insurance to support the Hispanic and Latina/e/o/x workforce and the impact they have on their communities. From providing educational resources to Hispanic and Latina/e/o/x employees to providing support for their families, Liberty is helping these individuals achieve success. It is this type of work that exemplifies the value of the Hispanic and Latina/e/o/x community and the impact they have on our society at large. It is this work that should be celebrated during National Hispanic Heritage Month and beyond.
