The Hudson Valley cradles a wealth of natural and cultural treasures. Magnificent scenery, historic mansions and renowned restaurants all contribute to the region’s appeal. National Geographic Traveler calls the area “one of the world’s best destinations.”
The river, forests, mountains, villages and farmland are all part of the Hudson Valley National Heritage Area, encompassing 10 counties stretching from Westchester County to Albany, the state capital. This pristine landscape is also home to wineries and orchards, sustainable-food champions such as Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture and the Storm King Art Center sculpture park.
It is a burgeoning culinary hub that has spawned Michelin- and Bib Gourmand restaurants, as well as the Culinary Institute of America where chefs in training whip up their versions of French, Italian and American cuisines using regional ingredients. And with a bounty of farm markets and craft breweries, the region is a gourmand’s dream.
Despite its privileged status as a New York City getaway, the Hudson Valley has a grittier side that is reflected in the artisanal foods of the region and the diverse cultures that make up the populace. Grass-roots movements like Grazin’, where a diner serves ethically sourced meat, and Basilica Hudson, an arts center in a former Nabisco factory, are making their mark. The area is home to a thriving Bangladeshi and Caribbean community as well, who have forged their own traditions.
As a result, you’ll find everything from the old-fashioned (county fairs, farmers’ markets and antique shops) to the contemporary (theater companies, coffee shops and outdoor sculpture parks). Washington Irving’s stories of Ichabod Crane and Sleepy Hollow resonate throughout the region. But it is the prevailing balance of nature and human ambition that defines the region.
The National Park Service and its partners are helping to preserve, protect, and share the story of this magnificent place. We invite you to come and discover why the Hudson River Valley has captivated so many writers, artists and presidents.
