In the United States, the Hudson Valley is an area along the Hudson River and into New Jersey. Often referred to as America’s Rhine, the Hudson Valley is 40 miles long and includes the towns of Bingen and Koblenz. Many people consider the Hudson River valley to extend to southern Westchester County, although residents in that area would not usually associate themselves with the term. For this reason, some people have trouble identifying the Hudson Valley as a region.
You can get to the Hudson Valley from New York City by taking Metro-North train. This train is connected to Grand Central Station, making it easy to get to towns in the region. Despite the convenience of public transportation, you will still want to rent a car to see everything that the Hudson Valley has to offer. You can also find car rental deals outside of New York City. This will save you a lot of money when compared to renting a car in NYC.
If you haven’t visited the Dia Foundation yet, make sure you do. The Dia Foundation has transformed the former Nabisco factory into a modern art museum. The Dia Foundation’s collection includes the massive spider by Louise Bourgeois, Dan Flavin light installations, and Richard Serra Cor-Ten steel sculptures. It’s worth the trip just to see its amazing collection. It’s a must-see in the Hudson Valley.
During the summer, you can take a dip in the Mohonk Preserve. The water there is a refreshing, clear blue color. If you’d rather spend the day relaxing, you can visit the Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian castle located just outside of New Paltz. The Mohonk Mountain House resort is located next to the visitor center. Its location in a restored Victorian castle overlooking the Mohonk Lake makes it an all-inclusive retreat. Guests are welcomed by volunteers dressed in period clothing.
If you’re driving, there are many other transportation options to reach the Hudson Valley. Metro North trains are the main public transportation option, with frequent service between Albany and NYC. You can check train times online or call the number of the nearest Amtrak station in Poughkeepsie. Once you’ve arrived at the train station, you’ll find a host of tourist attractions, including the beautiful Mt. Marcy.
